While thinking of how to start off this topic, i’d say it’s no secret that rape is an occurring issue in colleges all over the world. But then I got to thinking that “yeah, it is a secret.” People don’t like to acknowledge the issue as being serious. In fact, rape jokes are frequently being made as if that’s exactly what rape is. A joke. When in reality, it’s an extremely heavy and real issue.
Lady Gaga recently released a music video to her song “Till It Happens To You” which addresses the issue of rape. The video consists of a girl in her dorm, a trans-man in his bathroom, and two girls at a party. The first girl has a friend over to show him some music, he then pins her against the wall and rapes her. The trans-man (not fully transitioned) is in his bathroom when his assumed room mate comes in and rapes him. The last two girls are drugged by another student at a party and are taken back to his room. This video is highly graphic and does not censor the issue of rape in any way.
One of the biggest issues of rape is the fact that it’s censored so frequently. People glass over the issue and in doing so, society sees rape like a shadow in the dark. We know it’s there, but we don’t want to truly acknowledge it. Lady Gaga has a gigantic train of followers who will watch this video and see the dark truth of this issue occurring in colleges every single day. Video representation is so important that Lady Gaga is able to reach out to not only the victims of rape, but also every other person who views the video that needs to acknowledge the pounding matter of rape surrounding their lives.
If a victim of rape comes out to you and tells you their story, most peoples first instinct is to say “Well what were you wearing?”, as if the victim is to blame for the tragedy that has happened to them. The fact of the matter is, a rapist is going to rape. Men (or sometimes women) are completely able to control their impulses or hormones. What a person is wearing when they get raped isn’t even a factor in the issue. The only factor is the rapists ignorance inability to recognize another persons right to say no. Gaga’s video does a moving job at showing the compassion of peers at the end of the video. Roommates and friends of the rape victims are shown listening and comforting them, not criticizing or pointing blame. The best thing we can do as decent human beings is genuinely listen to and understand the situation at hand if you ever come across it.
Being a college student, it is vital to understand your own personal rights to your body and to other peoples bodies. It is vital to defend both yourself and the people who surround you. Ignorance in the issue of rape isn’t an option. Rape is heavy and leaves physiological scars to those involved. Do your research, become aware.
